Social Work Code of Ethics – A Closer Look

Social Work Code of Ethics – A Closer Look

Those of us who labor in social work face ethical dilemmas and considerations every day. It is essential to understand the Code of Ethics before we take the exam, during our training, and during our practice with clients as social workers. The more we are rooted in the theory and the concepts of social work the greater the impact we can make.

Ethics in Social Work

Social Work is grounded in an official Code of Ethics (aka The Code) so no matter our area of focus, child & family, social justice, policy, etc, we all deliver on the same promises.

    • service
    • social justice
    • dignity and worth of the person
    • importance of human relationships
    • integrity
    • competence

This constellation of core values reflects what is unique to the social work profession. Core values, and the principles that flow from them, must be balanced within the context and complexity of the human experience.

Ethical Dilemmas

What is an ethical dilemma? An ethical dilemma can be defined as (an ethical paradox or moral dilemma) which is a problem in the decision-making process between two possible options, neither of which is absolutely acceptable from an ethical perspective. Although we face many ethical and moral problems in our lives, most of them come with relatively straightforward solutions.

When it comes to facing ethical dilemmas in social work practice, take into consideration all the values, principles, and standards in the Code that are relevant to any situation in which ethical judgment is warranted. Social workers’ decisions and actions should be consistent with the essence of this Code. Additionally, when you choose to become a social worker, exemplifying the code across all areas personally and professionally enriches your life experiences and impacting those closest to you,

    • With clients
    • Within your organization
    • With your colleagues
    • With your professional development
